Carbon Neutral

I'm delighted to share that my entire expedition is carbon neutral! But wait what? What does that mean?

Going carbon neutral is an easy way to take responsibility for the greenhouse gas emissions we create every time we drive our cars, take a plane, or turn on our computers. It’s based on the principle that, since climate change is a global problem, an emission reduction made elsewhere has the same positive effect as one made locally.

Here’s how it works: if you add polluting emissions to the atmosphere, you can effectively subtract them by carbon offsetting. One could go plant a tree, turn vegetarian, or even purchase carbon offset credits. Carbon offsets are simply credits for emission reductions achieved by projects such as wind farms, solar installations, or energy efficiency retrofits.

 The IAE/ClimateForce: Antarctica 2018 expedition is a certified CarbonNeutral® Voyage that is offsetting the C02 impact by participating in the following six projects.

While the expedition is accounted for, my travel across to Argentina (the push off point) has yet to be accounted for and the emission would come up to about 11.443 tonnes of CO2e. Hence, i  purchased carbon offset credits and apply them to my own emissions to reduce my net climate impact. 

I've decided to contribute to a project closest to home, located in the southern, rural part of Indonesia's largest island, Sumatra. In order to offset the emission I have invested in a grid-connected hydro project that generates renewable electricity from the nearby Musi River, replacing fossil fuel-based power. The project continues to support local jobs and new income streams, and has helped fund infrastructure improvements as well as a reforestation program in the project area. 

It's been quite a rude awakening to calculate how much I consume in ones and zeros. Especially when I start calculating my household consumption and daily commuting too. We really need to be more aware of how much we put out into this world. 22 more days to Antarctica.
